Coil Processing Equipment Inspection Checklist: Daily to Annual

Most coil processing line breakdowns are not sudden. A bearing runs hot for weeks, a knife arbor develops runout, a brake pad wears past spec - and one day, mid-order, the line stops. A disciplined inspection routine catches almost all of it early.

This is the inspection checklist we use when servicing slitting lines, cut-to-length lines, decoilers and recoilers across India - including machines built by other manufacturers. Print it, put it on the line, and work through it on schedule.

Why Inspection Beats Reaction

A planned inspection costs minutes. An unplanned breakdown costs a shift or more, plus missed-delivery penalties. Inspection is not the same as maintenance - inspection is the looking that tells you what maintenance is actually needed, before a component fails. It also feeds the documented equipment history that AMC providers, auditors and buyers increasingly ask for.

Daily Inspection (Every Shift)

Two minutes at start-up catches the obvious:

  • Listen for unusual noise or vibration from drives, gearboxes and bearings
  • Look for hydraulic or lubrication leaks under the decoiler, slitter head and recoiler
  • Check all guards and covers are in place and secure
  • Test the emergency stops and safety interlocks respond
  • Scan operating temperatures - anything running hotter than usual is an early warning
  • Clear metal debris, scrap and offcuts from the work area and sensors

Weekly Inspection

  • Slitter knives and tooling - check for chips, wear and correct clearance; rotate or replace as needed
  • Tension system - verify brake pad condition, tension settings and that indicators read true
  • Strip tracking and alignment - confirm the strip runs straight through entry and exit guides
  • Lubrication points - grease bearings, chains and slideways per the schedule
  • Sensors and photocells - clean optical sensors so they read reliably

Monthly Inspection

  • Hydraulic system - oil level and condition, hose wear, filter state, pressure settings
  • Electrical - cable connections, motor temperatures, sensor calibration, interlock testing
  • Mechanical - bearing play, chain tension and wear, coupling and gear condition
  • Roll and arbor alignment - check parallelism and runout; misalignment shows up as edge-quality problems first. This is where equipment alignment and calibration checks earn their keep.

Quarterly Inspection

  • Full component review with performance testing under load
  • Calibration of measuring and tension systems
  • Gearbox oil change, bearing replacement where indicated
  • Knife arbor and mandrel system service
  • Update the maintenance log and spare-parts record

Annual Inspection (Overhaul-Level)

  • Frame alignment and structural verification
  • Complete electrical inspection and safety-system certification
  • Hydraulic system overhaul

Component-Specific Inspection Points

Decoiler

Mandrel expansion mechanism, brake system, hold-down arm function, coil car condition.

Slitter Head

Knife rotation schedule, arbor runout, spacer condition, stripping system.

Recoiler

Drum expansion service, tension calibration, separator-disc condition, drive check. Proper recoiler tension control depends on this staying in spec.

Leveller / Straightener

Roll-surface condition, backup-roll wear, gap-adjustment accuracy, drive chain.

What to Do With the Results

An inspection is only useful if it drives action. Log every finding with a date, flag anything out of spec, and schedule the fix before the next production run. Over a few months the log tells you which components are trending toward failure - which is exactly the data that lets you order spares in advance instead of during a breakdown.
