Coil Processing Equipment for the Automotive Industry

Automotive stamping tolerates nothing: strip that varies in width jams progressive dies, coil set becomes panel distortion, and a surface mark on skin-panel CR is a painted defect. Tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers live on PPM quality metrics, and coil processing is where that starts.

Friend Engineering Works supplies slitting lines, cut to length lines and straightening machines to automotive component manufacturers and stampers across India's auto belts — strip for progressive dies, leveled blanks for transfer presses, and processed coil for tube and seat-frame producers.

Automotive Processing Requirements

  • Stamping-grade strip: ±0.1mm width, burr within die limits, camber-free — progressive dies run at speed only on consistent strip
  • Stress-free blanks: CTL lines with precision levelers deliver flat, memory-free blanks so panels do not spring after forming
  • Surface protection for skin panels: covered rolls and interleaving for exposed CR/CRCA parts
  • Traceability: coil-to-blank consistency supports IATF-style process documentation

High-Strength Steel Note

Modern automotive grades (HSLA, dual-phase) slit very differently from mild steel: higher forces, faster knife wear, stronger springback. If your product mix includes high-strength grades, tell us — arbor sizing, knife material and leveler capacity are all affected, and retrofitting later is expensive.

Recommended Equipment

  • Slitting Line — Friend Engineering Works slitting lines are designed to ensure the highest standards of quality and productivity while processing different materials.
  • Cut to Length Line — We manufacture advanced Cut to Length Lines for uncoiling, straightening, gauging, cross-cutting to length, and stacking work.
  • Straightening Machine — Our straightening machines use multiple precision rollers to achieve flatness in metal sheets and strips.

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment do automotive stampers need for coil-fed presses?

The standard chain is: hydraulic decoiler → straightener/leveler → feeder into the press for progressive work, with slit coil prepared on a precision slitting line. For transfer press blanks, a CTL line with a precision leveler produces flat, stress-free blanks. We supply each element or the complete line.

Can your lines process high-strength automotive steels?

Yes, as a specified configuration. High-strength and HSLA grades need heavier arbors, premium knife material and levelers with higher work capacity. Share your grade list (with tensile ranges) and gauge mix, and the line will be sized for it from the start.

How does leveling affect stamping quality?

A leveler removes coil set and internal stresses before blanking. Un-leveled material springs and twists after cutting and forming, causing dimensional scatter in stamped panels. For automotive blanks, a precision leveler in the CTL line is what keeps parts within fixture tolerance.
