Hot Rolled (HR) Steel Slitting & Cut to Length Lines

Hot rolled coil is where coil processing machinery earns its keep: 25–40 tonne coils, thicknesses to 10mm, mill scale, high springback and serious slitting forces. An under-built line does not just produce bad strip — it breaks.

Friend Engineering Works HR slitting lines and CTL lines are the heavy end of our range: welded steel frames, high-torque drives, robust slitter arbors and scale-tolerant components, processing HR and HRPO coils from 1.5mm to 10mm at coil weights up to 40 tonnes.

What Heavy-Gauge Processing Demands

  • Structural rigidity: slitting 8mm HR generates forces that flex light frames — our HR heads use oversized arbors and close-coupled bearings
  • High-torque drives: thick strip needs sustained torque at low speed, not just top-end line speed
  • Scale management: mill scale abrades rolls and contaminates the line; HR configurations use hardened, scale-tolerant contact parts
  • Springback control: heavy gauge holds coil set strongly — levelers and straighteners are sized with the roll diameter and spacing for the gauge
  • Safe coil handling: 30–40 tonne coils require hydraulic decoilers, coil cars and holddown arms as standard, not options

Who Runs Our HR Lines

Steel service centers processing mill coil for regional fabricators, ERW pipe and tube mills slitting skelp, purlin and guardrail manufacturers, and heavy fabrication shops cutting HR sheet on CTL lines. If your material comes from a hot strip mill, this is the configuration built for it.

Recommended Equipment

  • Slitting Line — Friend Engineering Works slitting lines are designed to ensure the highest standards of quality and productivity while processing different materials.
  • Cut to Length Line — We manufacture advanced Cut to Length Lines for uncoiling, straightening, gauging, cross-cutting to length, and stacking work.
  • Decoiler Machine — Our decoiler machines are designed for efficient and safe uncoiling operations with heavy-duty construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum thickness your slitting lines can process?

Our HR slitting lines process up to 10mm thickness. For cut to length and leveling applications, configurations up to 20mm are available. Above these ranges, we design custom heavy-gauge lines against your specification.

Do HR slitting lines need a scrap chopper instead of a scrap winder?

Above roughly 4–5mm, edge trim becomes too stiff to wind reliably and a scrap chopper (cutting trim into short pieces) is the better solution. We supply both — the choice is made from your gauge mix during line specification.

Can one line process both HR and CR coils?

A combined range (for example 0.8–6mm) is possible and we build such lines, but there are trade-offs: an arbor sized for 10mm HR cannot hold CR-grade precision at 0.3mm. If your business genuinely spans both, we help you choose the split — one combination line or two optimized lines — based on your volume at each gauge.
