What Is a Cut to Length Line and How Does It Work?

If you buy metal in coil form but sell or use it as flat sheets, a cut to length line is the machine that connects the two. This guide explains what a cut to length line is, how it works stage by stage, and how to tell whether it is the right machine for your operation.

Friend Engineering Works has designed and built cut to length lines at our plant in Vasai, Maharashtra since 1994, with 500+ machines delivered across 19 Indian states and 4 countries. The explanation below reflects how these lines actually run on the shop floor, not just the theory.

What Is a Cut to Length Line?

A cut to length line (often shortened to CTL line) is an automated line that takes a wide metal coil, flattens it, and cuts it crosswise into flat sheets of an exact length. The output is a stack of ready-to-use sheets rather than a coil.

This is the key difference buyers need to understand: a cut to length line produces flat sheets, while a slitting line cuts a coil lengthwise into narrower strips that stay in coil form. We cover that comparison in detail in cut to length line vs slitting line.

How a Cut to Length Line Works: The Five Stages

A cut to length machine processes the coil in one continuous, synchronised flow:

1. Decoiling. The master coil is loaded onto a decoiler, which holds and unwinds it under control so the strip feeds into the line without snatching or surface damage.

2. Levelling. The strip passes through a precision multi-roll leveller that removes coil set, crossbow and edge wave. This flatness stage is what separates a usable sheet from a warped one, and we explain it fully in the role of the leveller in a CTL line.

3. Measuring and feeding. A servo-driven feed system with encoder feedback measures the exact length of material fed, so every sheet matches the programmed size. On our lines, length accuracy is held to approximately plus or minus 0.5mm.

4. Shearing. A shear (hydraulic or mechanical) cuts the strip cleanly across its width at the set length. The line either stops momentarily to cut or uses a flying shear that cuts on the move; see flying shear vs stop-start CTL lines.

5. Stacking. The cut sheets are collected and stacked automatically, ready for handling, bundling and dispatch.

What a CTL Line Can Process

Our cut to length lines handle cold rolled (CR), hot rolled (HR), stainless steel, tinplate and aluminium, in thicknesses from 0.10mm up to 20mm and coil widths from 150mm to 2500mm, cutting sheets from 500mm to 6000mm long. For material-specific guidance, see our CTL line material guide.

Who Uses a Cut to Length Line?

Steel service centres, roofing and cladding sheet makers, automotive panel producers, appliance manufacturers and electrical panel fabricators all rely on CTL lines to turn bought-in coil into saleable or usable sheet. If flatness and exact length matter to your product, this is the machine that delivers both.
