Flying Shear vs Stop-Start Cut to Length Line: Which to Choose
Technical Guide · Published 2026-09-18 · 7 min read · By Friend Engineering Works
One decision shapes a cut to length line's speed more than any other: how it cuts. A cut to length line either stops the strip to shear it, or cuts while the material keeps moving using a flying shear. This guide explains the difference and which one fits your operation.
Stop-Start (Stop-and-Cut) Lines
In a stop-start line, the servo feed advances the strip to the set length, the line pauses, the shear cuts, and then the feed advances again. It is simpler, more economical, and perfectly capable for many operations.
Best for: low-to-medium volume, thicker gauges, longer sheet lengths, and buyers who want a dependable line at a lower price.
The trade-off: the stop-cut-start cycle limits top speed, and the repeated acceleration and deceleration can affect cut-position consistency at high rates.
Flying Shear Lines
In a flying shear line, the shear accelerates to match the strip speed, cuts on the move, then returns for the next cut - the strip never stops. This removes the stop-start cycle entirely.
Best for: high-volume production, thinner gauges, long runs of identical sheets, and applications like roofing and cladding where throughput drives profitability.
The trade-off: more complex, higher cost, and it needs precise synchronisation between feed and shear - which is where in-house engineering and good control systems matter.
How to Decide
Work backwards from your output target and product mix:
- High daily tonnage, thin material, repeat lengths? A flying shear usually pays for itself in throughput.
- Varied jobs, thicker plate, moderate volume? A stop-start line gives you reliability and accuracy at a better price.
- Unsure? Share your real volumes and sheet mix and let the numbers decide. Our RFQ checklist lists what to provide.
Accuracy Is Not Only About the Shear
Whichever you choose, length accuracy also depends on the servo feed and encoder, not just the shear. We cover that in cut to length line accuracy.
