Cut to Length Line Accuracy: Understanding Length Tolerance

Technical Guide · Published 2026-09-25 · 6 min read · By Friend Engineering Works

When buyers compare cut to length lines, length accuracy is the headline number - but it is widely misunderstood. This guide explains what cutting tolerance actually means on a cut to length line, what affects it, and why consistency over a full run matters as much as the figure on the datasheet.

What Length Accuracy Means

Length accuracy is how closely each cut sheet matches the programmed length. Our lines hold approximately plus or minus 0.5mm. That means a sheet programmed at 2000mm should come out between roughly 1999.5mm and 2000.5mm.

The key word is every sheet. A line that hits the length on the first cut but drifts over a 1,000-sheet run is not accurate in any way that helps you. Repeatability across the whole batch is the real test.

What Determines Accuracy

1. The servo feed and encoder. This is the heart of length control. A servo-driven feed with encoder feedback measures material precisely before each cut. Slippage or a low-resolution encoder is where accuracy is lost. See CTL components.

2. Flatness going into the feed. A strip that is not properly levelled can slip or feed unevenly, so the leveller indirectly affects length accuracy too.

3. Shear timing. The cut must trigger at exactly the right position. On a flying shear, synchronisation between feed and shear is critical.

4. Material behaviour. Harder grades and different thicknesses feed slightly differently; a well-built line and control system compensate for this.

Why Tolerance Should Match Your Product

Tighter is not always better if it costs more than your product needs. A structural sheet may tolerate more variation than a precision blank feeding an automated press. Specify the tolerance your downstream process actually requires, and no tighter - it keeps the line cost sensible. More on cost in cut to length line price in India.

Holding Accuracy Over Time

Accuracy on day one is one thing; accuracy after a year is another. Encoder condition, feed roll wear and alignment all drift without maintenance. Keep them in check with a routine like our CTL maintenance checklist.
