Cut to Length Line Maintenance Checklist for Maximum Uptime
Maintenance · Published 2026-10-01 · 7 min read · By Friend Engineering Works
A cut to length line is a capital asset that earns only when it is running. The difference between a line that runs for years at spec and one that drifts into breakdowns is almost always maintenance. Here is a practical checklist built from decades of servicing coil processing lines.
Daily Checks
- Inspect the shear blade for nicks or dullness; poor blades cause burrs and inaccurate cuts
- Check leveller rolls for marks, pickup or debris, especially when running coated or stainless coil
- Confirm the decoiler holds tension smoothly with no snatching
- Listen for unusual noise or vibration anywhere on the line
- Keep the feed and shear area clear of scrap and offcuts
Weekly Checks
- Lubricate moving parts per the schedule - feed rolls, shear mechanism, stacker
- Inspect hydraulic lines and fittings for leaks (on hydraulic shears)
- Check electrical connections and the control panel for loose terminals or heat
- Verify length accuracy on a test batch; a small drift caught early is easy to correct
Monthly Checks
- Check alignment of the leveller, feed and shear; misalignment quietly wrecks flatness and accuracy
- Inspect encoder and feed rolls for wear - these directly affect length accuracy
- Review PLC fault logs for recurring warnings
- Inspect the stacker for alignment and smooth operation
Quarterly and Annual
- Comprehensive inspection of structure, drives, bearings and hydraulics
- Re-calibrate the measuring system
- Re-grind or replace shear blades as wear dictates
- Full alignment check across the whole line
A structured version of this applies to all coil processing equipment - see our equipment inspection checklist and maintenance tips.
Knife and Blade Care
Shear blade condition is to a CTL line what knife condition is to a slitting line: the single biggest factor in cut quality. Re-grind on a schedule based on tonnage and material hardness, before edge quality visibly drops.
When to Bring in an AMC
If in-house maintenance is hard to resource, an Annual Maintenance Contract puts scheduled servicing and breakdown support on a professional footing. Friend Engineering Works services coil processing lines of any brand - see our service and maintenance program and what an AMC should include.
