Cut to Length Line Components Explained: Decoiler to Stacker

A cut to length line is only as good as its weakest component. Understanding what each part does helps you specify the right line, spot where a cheaper quote has cut corners, and maintain the machine properly once it is running. Here is a component-by-component walkthrough from the team that builds them.
1. Decoiler / Uncoiler
The decoiler carries the master coil and feeds it into the line under controlled tension. Get the capacity right for your heaviest coil, and make sure the mandrel expansion range suits your inner diameters. An undersized or poorly controlled decoiler causes feeding problems that show up everywhere downstream.
2. Coil Car / Loading System
A coil car lifts and positions heavy coils onto the decoiler safely and repeatably. For high-volume plants it removes a slow, risky manual step. Sizing it correctly matters - our coil car and mandrel buying guide covers the details.
3. Leveller
The precision multi-roll leveller removes coil set, crossbow and edge wave so the sheet comes out flat and stress-free. This is the single most important component for sheet quality. We explain it fully in the role of the leveller in a CTL line.
4. Servo Feed and Measuring System
A servo-driven feed with encoder feedback measures the exact length fed before each cut. This is what delivers consistent sheet length - on our lines, accuracy to approximately plus or minus 0.5mm. The precision of this stage is covered in cut to length line accuracy.
5. Shear
The shear cuts the strip cleanly across its width at the programmed length. It may be hydraulic or mechanical, and it either stops the strip to cut or cuts on the move as a flying shear. The choice affects both speed and edge quality - see flying shear vs stop-start CTL lines.
6. Stacker
The stacker collects finished sheets into a neat, aligned stack ready for bundling and dispatch. Automatic stacking keeps a fast line fed and removes manual handling at the exit end.
7. PLC and HMI Control
A PLC with an HMI touch panel ties every section together, synchronising decoiler, leveller, feed, shear and stacker so the line runs as one machine. Programmable sheet lengths and batch counts make changeovers quick.
Why In-House Manufacturing Matters
When one manufacturer builds and integrates all of these components, they match as a system rather than a collection of bought-in parts. Friend Engineering Works manufactures its cut to length lines this way, which also means single-source accountability for service and spares.
