Coil Processing for Appliance & White Goods Manufacturing
Appliance panels are the most visible steel most consumers ever touch. Washing machine cabinets, refrigerator doors and microwave bodies are stamped from CRCA, PPGI and stainless strip where surface finish is the product — and every one of those panels started on a slitting or cut to length line.
Friend Engineering Works supplies coil processing lines to appliance and white-goods component manufacturers: surface-safe slitting for skin panels, CTL lines with precision leveling for large flat panels, and SS-configured lines for premium finishes.
Appliance Materials & Their Processing Demands
| Material | Used For | Processing Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| CRCA 0.4–0.8mm | Cabinets, wrappers, doors | Scratch-free handling, stress-free leveling |
| PPGI/VCM 0.4–0.6mm | Pre-finished panels | Coating-safe line, interleaving |
| SS 304 0.4–1mm | Premium fronts, drums, sinks | SS configuration with surface protection |
| GI 0.5–1mm | Back panels, internal structures | Standard GI-safe processing |
Why Leveling Quality Shows Up in the Showroom
Large flat appliance panels — refrigerator sides, washing machine wrappers — reveal every leveling defect as visible waviness under showroom lighting ('oil canning'). A CTL line with a properly specified precision leveler removes coil set and internal stress so big panels stay flat after stamping and assembly. This is the single most appliance-specific requirement in coil processing.
Line Recommendations for Appliance Plants
- CTL line with precision leveler (17–21 rolls for light gauge) for panel blanks
- Precision slitting line with covered rolls and interleaving for strip-fed progressive dies
- SS-configured processing for stainless fronts and drums
- Coil cars and jacks sized for your coil stock to keep handling damage out of the process
Recommended Equipment
- Cut to Length Line — We manufacture advanced Cut to Length Lines for uncoiling, straightening, gauging, cross-cutting to length, and stacking work.
- Slitting Line — Friend Engineering Works slitting lines are designed to ensure the highest standards of quality and productivity while processing different materials.
- Straightening Machine — Our straightening machines use multiple precision rollers to achieve flatness in metal sheets and strips.
Frequently Asked Questions
What causes 'oil canning' on large appliance panels and how is it prevented?
Oil canning — visible waviness on large flat panels — comes from residual stress and poor flatness in the blank. Prevention starts at the CTL line: a precision leveler with enough small-diameter rolls for the gauge removes coil set and equalizes internal stress before the panel is ever stamped.
What leveler configuration suits appliance-gauge CRCA?
Light appliance gauges (0.4–0.8mm) level best with many small rolls — typically 17 to 21 — at close spacing. Our straightening machines and CTL levelers are configured per gauge range; see the straightening machine page for roll-count guidance.
Can you process pre-painted (VCM/PPGI) appliance material?
Yes. Pre-finished appliance stock is handled like premium PPGI: covered rolls, controlled tension, film interleaving options and knife setups that keep the paint film intact to the slit edge.
