    Working Principle

How Does a Decoiler Machine Work?

A decoiler (also called uncoiler or payoff reel) is essential coil handling equipment that holds metal coils and unwinds them at controlled rates for downstream processing. The decoiler is the first component in any coil processing line and its reliable operation is critical for consistent production.

    1

    Coil Loading

The coil is transported to the decoiler by crane, forklift, or coil car. The coil is positioned on the mandrel (expanding drum) with proper centering.

    2

    Mandrel Expansion

The hydraulic or pneumatic system expands the mandrel segments outward to grip the coil inner diameter securely. This prevents coil slip during unwinding.

    3

    Coil Preparation

The hold-down arm (if equipped) secures the coil outer wrap. The peeler (if equipped) lifts the strip end for threading into the line.

    4

    Strip Threading

The operator feeds the strip end through pinch rolls and into the downstream equipment. Initial threading may be manual or assisted.

    5

    Controlled Unwinding

The decoiler unwinds the coil at controlled speed synchronized with line demand. Motorized decoilers use VFD drives; brake types use friction control.

    6

    Tension Control

Proper back-tension is maintained throughout unwinding to prevent strip sagging or over-tensioning. This ensures smooth feeding to the processing line.

    Machine Components

    Key Components of a Decoiler

Decoilers are engineered with robust components designed for reliable operation with heavy coils. Understanding each component helps in proper operation and maintenance.

    ComponentFunction
Base FrameHeavy-duty fabricated steel structure providing stable foundation for all components.
Mandrel (Expanding Drum)Holds the coil by expanding against the inner diameter. Hydraulic or pneumatic expansion.
Drive SystemAC motor with VFD (motorized) or brake system (non-motorized) controls unwinding speed.
Hold-Down ArmPneumatic or hydraulic arm that presses on the coil OD to prevent loose unwinding.
PeelerLifts the strip leading edge from the coil for easy threading. May be hydraulic or pneumatic.
Coil Car (Optional)Motorized carrier that transports coils to the decoiler for safe, efficient loading.
Threading Table (Optional)Guides the strip from decoiler to the processing line during initial threading.
