How Does a Straightening Machine Work?
A straightening machine (also called leveler or flattening machine) removes shape defects from metal strips and sheets using multiple precision work rolls. The material is bent alternately up and down through the roll set, progressively relieving internal stresses and achieving flatness. Proper leveling is essential for downstream fabrication quality.
Material Entry
The strip or sheet enters the straightener through pinch rolls that maintain proper tension and guide the material into the work roll section.
Initial Bending
Entry rolls apply the maximum bending, exceeding the material's yield point to begin stress relief. Roll gaps are set based on material properties.
Progressive Flattening
As material passes through successive rolls, bending intensity decreases. Each roll set further reduces internal stresses and shape defects.
Final Passes
Exit rolls apply light bending to finalize flatness. The material emerges flat and stress-free, ready for further processing or fabrication.
Backup Roll Support
Backup rolls support the work rolls to prevent deflection under load. This is critical for consistent flatness across the full material width.
Material Exit
The flattened material exits through delivery rolls and proceeds to subsequent operations (cutting, stacking, or further processing).
